Well, it seems clear that Calimero, my black macbook, is affected by the random shutdown problem.
Quick solution: down buy a macbook. That is: wait for the next release.
In order to postpone my visit to the lovely Geniuses of Regent Street until after BlogTalk, so far I tried the following workarounds:
. reset the Power Management Unit - no luck
. reset the PRAM - no luck, but got a nice rainbow stripe screen.
. force the system into "safe mode" by holding the power button at startup - works but caps the CPU speed at 1Ghz. You don't want that.
Currently I gave it a last try doing a combo of PMU+PRAM reset, and starting applications one by one (so so so sad).
I'm also keeping an eye on CPU stats with CoreDuoTemp, and it shows the temp being steady around 57 degrees (Celsius) which should be fine. Speed is at 1.5Ghz.
I wonder if there is any utility out there to fine tune the fan activation threshold temperature.
update: the combo-move seems to have some effect... the macbook hasn't rebooted since this morning. I "loading" it with just a fraction of the usual skype + adium + plazer + growl + last.fm + dozen firefox tabs + textmate + ecto + iTunes + RDC (but I tried to let world-of-warcraft run on a background window for fifteen minutes), but it's a HUGE step forward nevertheless.
